Leopard Conservation Work Continues Despite Yemen Unrest

The Foundation currently manages four Arabian Leopard research and conservation projects which remain largely unaffected by the troubling situation in Yemen, even as Yemeni Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi assumes power following a mortar attack which injured President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Friday.

Waleed Al-Ra'il and Murad Mohammed reported from Hawf on the day of the attack that they are both fine and that they are comfortable continuing the work. Dr. Mohammed Al-Doais wrote from Ibb to say that he is obtaining interesting results in the Ibb Leopard Survey with convincing local reports of recent leopard presence in the governorate.

These remain unsubstantiated though the Foundation plans on deploying camera traps in Ibb as soon as it can purchase the hardware. Nasser Aswot, continues to work in Jebel Milhan at a reduced level as it is planting season and he is preoccupied with the family farm.

The Foundation takes the safety of its researchers very seriously and although all are free to suspend their projects at any time, it is the judgement of each that his work can continue unabated. The only project that has been negatively affected by the security situation is the Vanishing Spots children's book project which is temporarily on hold as it is the Foundation's judgment that now is not a sensible time to launch a children's book.
