Boy savaged by ape after father ignores 'don't feed the monkeys' sign at zoo | Mail Online


A four-year-old boy has been seriously injured by an ape after his father ignored 'don‘t feed the animals' signs in a wild animal park in Austria.
Authorities said the man lifted his son up over a warning wire to get close to the Barbary ape - ignoring 'Danger: These creatures bite!' notices - when his son was bitten in the face and hand.
The boy, known only as Leon, needed emergency surgery after the incident at the Preding Animal Park on Monday.
Michael Hoellwarth, who performed the operation on the child in Graz, said the ape called Juppi had bitten through nerve endings that mean the child could lose the use of one of his hands.
He told the Austrian Independent: 'That’s the third time a visitor was bitten by a monkey there.

'I wrote to the managers asking them to strengthen safety and accident prevention standards, but no one got back to me.'

  1. APE? Surely, people should know the difference betewwn apes and monkeys by now. Also, one would think that people would be able to read a simple sign. There is no hope for humanity.

    I feel no sympathy what-so-ever for anyone but the child (assuming the boy coundn't read).

  2. Yes Heather I am sure that many are well aware that the Barbary Ape is the only African Macaque....and Europes only monkey but they are commonly known as Apes. It has been that way for hundreds of years and is not likely to change in a hurry.
