Cairo Zoo Concerns

The Egyptian Newspaper ALMASRYALYOUM today broke the news that there are plans to lease out the Giza (Cairo) Zoo to a private contractor for a period of 25 years. Already plagued by problems caused by lack of finance it remains to be seen whether such a move would actually be an advantage or a disadvantage to the zoos main residents, the animals.

Only recently the Chimpanzees were moved out of their unsatisfactory accommodation to make room for the Orangutans gifted (or possibly this was an exchange) to them from the Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort.

The Giza Zoo was kicked out of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) for its failure to comply to standards.

What the zoo needs is management by zoo professionals (not Animal Rights cultists) with the aim of meeting EAZA standards. This along with a marriage to suitable commercial partnerships could well be the way forward.
