Wild Ass Amber Ale

What a nice idea. It could an extra dimension to "Brew in the zoo".


St. Louis Zoo worker brews Wild Ass Ale to benefit animal causes

Jim Lovins, a longtime St. Louis Zoo employee and Florissant home brewer, has created a beer recipe that will be contract-brewed at O’Fallon Brewery next month and available for sale at area stores by Memorial Day.



Wild Ass Amber Ale — named for the African Wild Ass, an endangered, zebra-like donkey – is dry-hopped with Willamette hops and oak-aged. It contains 6 percent alcohol by volume.



“I’ve been home-brewing for 15 years, and this beer especially is one that everyone seems to love,” Lovins told me today on his lunch break outside the zoo’s Reptile House. “So I saved up my money and decided to brew it, package it and try to help a good cause.”



The zoo’s aquarist for the past 20 years, Lovins is known as “The Fish Guy” and is in charge of aquatic displays and collections. He also makes yearly research treks to the Amazon River and contributes to the zoo’s WildCare Institute. He says
