Dear Colleague,
Sadly, I have to report that Richard Hughes of Chester Zoo died as a
result of injuries he sustained following the attack by the
elephant "Kumara". (Reported here two weeks ago). I did not know
Richard but I knew of him and I know people who worked with him. I
share their loss and mourn with them. Richard had achieved much in
his 34 years till he landed his "dream job" of elephant keeper.
His father described him as someone who "lived, slept and breathed
elephants".
Richards's death is a tragic loss not only to his family, to Chester
zoo but to the animal keeping profession as a whole.

Encyclopedia
Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia is an internationally prominent
scientific reference compilation, first published in 13 volumes in
German in the late 1960s. The Gale Group has acquired rights to
revise the English translation of this acclaimed series and is
seeking qualified members of the scientific community to serve on the
Grzimek's Editorial Board.
The original Grzimek's Tierleben Enzyklopaedie was prepared under the
editorship of notable zoologist Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987). Mr.
Grzimek had served as director of the Frankfurt Zoo and also directed
the documentary film "The Serengeti Must Not Die", which won Germany
its first Academy Award.
The Grzimek's set is known for the clarity of its scientific
reporting and the comprehensiveness of its coverage. It describes
animals found anywhere on the globe, in the following format:

The City of Topeka (KS, USA) Zoo is seeking Zoo Keepers.
This position is responsible for providing care to Zoo animals in the
zoological park. Duties include preparing diets, observing and
correcting animal behavior, providing assistance in administering

Cleans cages, holding pens and other confinement areas, makes repairs
as necessary. Prepares special project reports, researches and
gathers information for these projects and reports information to
management. This position will work first shift, rotating days,
primarily 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., hours subject to change during
spring/summer months, dependent upon established Zoo operating

minded people, more often than any other similar publication on the

Zoo Biology is a discussion, question and answer group dealing with
the diverse range of Zoo Sciences. The Zoo Biology Group is concerned
with all disciplines involved in the running of a Zoological Garden.
Captive breeding, husbandry, cage design and construction, diets,
enrichment, man management, record keeping, etc. Hediger described
this as "the science which embraced everything which was biologically
relevant to the management of the zoological garden." The more that
join up the more effective a management tool it will become. This
group is restricted to zoo professionals and is not advertised in the
egroup directory. It is specifically a forum for professional Zoo
Staff. Exceptions may be considered in the case of students or allied
professions. Do be prepared to receive from 1-30+ messages per day!!
There is a members only chat site attached to Zoo Biology. This
appears to work quite well. The useful archive section increases each
day. There are 950+ Zoo Biology subscribers to date.
More join each week. Do be prepared to get a lot of messages. If
there are more messages than you can manage...don't forget your
delete button. It take less than a second. This group is moderated.
